With the vast market of vitamins and supplements available, it can be difficult determining which ones to take on a daily basis. There are a few essential supplements we need for optimal health and wellness.

1. A High-Quality Multivitamin
Whether you eat an extremely healthy diet or eat mostly processed foods, we are most likely not getting optimal amounts of nutrients and minerals. We need 6-8 servings of fruits and vegetables each day in order to get the nutrients the body needs to function properly and to protect against illness. However, most people do not get these daily recommended amounts through their diet. Also contributing to lack of nutrients in our diet, much of our produce is grown in nutrient depleted soil resulting in less vitamin and mineral content.

To ensure we are getting the right amounts of nutrients and minerals, a high-quality multivitamin is a must. High quality multivitamins will dissolve and absorb properly in your body. Very often, supplements you buy are not in a form that can be broken down and absorbed by your body, so you are getting no benefit. Although it does not guarantee 100% assurance, one way to check the quality of your multivitamin is to see whether the product is certified by an organization that assures purity and quality such as the United State Pharmacopeia (www.usp.org) or the NSF International (www.nsf.org). 2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids / Fish Oil
Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements are essential to good health by reducing inflammation and help prevent chronic disease. 3. Calcium and Vitamin D
As you probably already know, we need calcium with Vitamin D3 for strong, healthy bones.  But how many of us know if we are getting enough on a daily basis?  One way to ensure vitamin D is getting some sunshine!   Vitamin D produced within the body when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and enables normal mineralization of bone. Calcium and Vitamin D promotes muscle strength, helps build bones, strengthens the immune system and has both anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. The current recommended daily dose of calcium are 1,000 to 1,200 mg depending on your age, and Vitamin D3 for adults up to age 70 is 600 IU and 800 IU for ages over 70. Be sure to check to see if your multivitamin already contains the recommended daily dose of of both!

4. Probiotic
A good probiotic is essential for healthy digestive function. Our digestive system contains good bacteria that aid in digestion. Due to poor diets and aging, we lose some of our good bacteria, and we may experience digestive complications. Also, certain medications, such as antibiotics can kill off good bacteria and leave your system out of balance.
